At NUS, we push boundaries to achieve research excellence through multiple disciplines. We have adopted an integrated approach that brings together researchers from diverse fields. Through the combined strength of our faculties, schools, research institutes and centres, we have built eight integrative research clusters. These are ageing, Asian studies, biomedical science and translational medicine, finance and risk management, integrative sustainability solutions, maritime, materials science and smart nation.

Our researchers are embedded within Research Centre's of Excellence, the University's Schools and Faculties, and affiliated with numerous research institutes and centres, corporate laboratories and consortia.

Global Collaborations


To date, NUS has established 5 Corporate Laboratories together with industry partners, through the support of the National Research Foundation's corporate lab scheme. Several technology consortia have also been established with support from the National Research Foundation to integrate research outcomes around a technology area. NUS is a founding member in 6 consortia to date.


The Office of the Deputy President (Research & Technology) administers over 100 research grant programmes. These grant programmes are supported from internal and/or external sources and offer research funding on competitive and non-competitive bases.


The National University of Singapore strives to ensure all research is conducted responsibly and honestly. We are committed to the ethical treatment of animals, and actively consider the environmental impact of our research. We strive to protect the privacy of people involved in our studies.



Research at NUS is supported by the Office of the Deputy President (Research and Technology). We provide oversight of the University's research compliance and integrity, grant administration, strategic initiatives, industry engagement and alliances, as well as research communications and promotion. We also incorporate the NUS Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), which oversees the care and use of animals for scientific purposes in NUS, and the Institutional Review Board, which approves and monitors the ethical aspects of all NUS research projects that involve human subjects and human tissues/cells/data.

Professor Chen Tsuhan was appointed Deputy President (Research and Technology) and Distinguished Professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS) on 1 June 2018. Prof Chen is a renowned expert in pattern recognition, computer vision, and machine learning. He is also the Chief Scientist of AI Singapore, a national programme in artificial intelligence hosted at NUS.
